The Leopard Tortiose (Stigmochelys pardalis) is an attractive looking tortoise found in the Eastern and Southern savannah of Africa. They can live to be over 80 years old and up to 20 kgs in weight although larger specimans do occur. The are herbivores eating mixed savannah grasses and succulants. Their defense mechanism is to retract head and limbs into the shell (carapace). They are common in savannah game and nature reserves but considered endangered in areas of high human population.
