Some South African Words
Traditional South African Safari words or things you may experience on a safari
Braai – a wood or charcoal fire to cook food on…basically a traditional South African BBQ
Boerewors – traditional spiced sausage cooked on Braai
Pap – also called mieliepap, a traditional maize porridge/polenta. Can be made to various consistencies and often accompanied by a warm tomato and onion based sauce or gravy
Biltong – dried meat, usually beef but also game meats. Eaten as a snack like crisps and peanuts
Droewors – thin dried sausage. Also eaten as a snack.
Lekker – word meaning “nice” for example “That braai was lekker”. Its actually an Afrikaans word but is used by many people in South Africa.
